As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for another season, their commitment to environmental sustainability takes the field with the introduction of two new BioSpeed Composting units at Arrowhead Stadium.
Sustainability at Arrowhead Stadium
After a stellar season, the leadership’s vision is set towards the future, with the Chiefs' proactive waste management and energy efficiency goals continuing to align seamlessly with the Green Sports Alliance and their 2030 commitments.
The Chiefs' sustainability journey at Arrowhead Stadium spans over a decade, with notable initiatives in waste diversion, compostable packaging, the “Extra Yard for the Environment” program, and solar panel installation already setting the tone on their committed approach to environmental stewardship, both on and off the field.
The BioSpeed Technology
In line with these sustainability efforts, the Chiefs are set to integrate two BioSpeed M2 Composting units at Arrowhead Stadium, with the capacity to process a combined 900 lbs of organic waste daily while fully transforming it in under 72 hours.
Initially, this aerobic on-site composting system will primarily focus on pre-consumer food waste from the stadium's kitchens, resulting in nutrient-rich soil amendment and fertilizer that will be readily available throughout the season.
The year-round operation of these two units alone has the potential to divert up to 56 metric tons of CO2e every year by eliminating land ll methane, waste trucking, and landfill heavy operating vehicles.
Aligning with GSA's Strategies and Closing The Loop
The GSA's key strategies for sustainable sports events include solid waste recycling, food recovery and donation, and materials reuse and repurposing. Beyond waste diversion, the compost produced benefits soil health, acting as a continuous carbon sequestration mechanism. Compost enhances soil structure, improves water retention, and fosters healthy microbial communities, creating an effective after-use materials economy as well.
Continuing to divert food waste while providing an additional carbon capture mechanism through their daily operations will place the Team amongst the top contributors and environmental stewards in the upcoming seasons.
Past the End Zone at Arrowhead
The integration of BioSpeed units at Arrowhead Stadium is more than an environmental initiative; it's a commitment to creating a lasting green legacy.
The Chiefs have placed themselves amongst the industry’s pioneers, continuously setting an example for others in the sports industry to follow. By constantly incorporating new, durable, and effective sustainable practices, the Chiefs continue to extend their impact beyond the field, contributing to a more environmentally conscious future for their community, and the entire world of sports.
